A gorgeous Brand Discovery project with OliveTreeHome.

If you receive my newsletter, you’ll know that I’ve been promising this post for a little while. Back in April, I worked with the lovely Helen from OliveTreeHome on a Brand Discovery project, and there was much interest from my IG friends and lots of requests to share exactly what Brand Discovery is all about. A Brand Discovery project is a wonderful opportunity to get as immersed in a brand as I would during a full-scale project, but also to see clients harnessing their own creativity in their business. Not all business owners are in a position to finance a project when a brand is still young — completely normal — but if you’re serious about crafting a distinctive brand yet don’t have the budget for full-service branding, Brand Discovery offers actionable guidance and provides you with the clarity and confidence you need to act on it, without the large investment. Sometimes, the best way to get something done is to simply ask for help, and Brand Discovery is all about helping you to identify your pain points and develop a creative direction to help guide you through the world of self-branding. Essentially, it’s my strategy and design process, but without the design.

Helen launched OliveTreeHome in 2017 and created a wonderful range of candles and home products that have been selling well for a long time, but knew that her brand needed some refining ahead of the launch of her Summer Boutique collection this month. We worked together for a period of time before the launch to collectively build out a creative direction for OTH moving forward and figure out how we could create some space for the brand to grow into. The strategy process for a Brand Discovery project is very similar to the process I use with clients investing in a full-scale project and is packed with inspiration and insights on everything from brand personalities and seasons to typography and colour. Each client will feel, and lack, confidence in different areas, and each Brand Discovery project is completely unique because of that. Helen isn’t afraid to get creative and take control of her visual identity (and has been doing so, pretty brilliantly, since day one!), but needed some support with brand messaging, awareness and strategy.

I’m sharing a slightly shortened version of Helen’s Brand Discovery below, with some of the deeper work removed, to give you an idea of how the ideas and inspiration came together. Pieces I haven’t shared include art direction, brand imagery, brand messaging and some strategy surrounding future products and collections. If you’d like to learn a little more about Brand Discovery and how a project might be able to support your needs, please do get in touch.

Brand Discovery is a fantastic option if you are in the early days of business and need bespoke support, but don’t have the spare capacity or funds for a full-scale, multi-phase project. It’s an opportunity to learn and grow with confidence, instead of trying to do it all on your own, all whilst harnessing your creativity and remaining completely at the centre of your brand and business.
